Amber was typing.

Nice work, Miss Spa-ple. Anything else?

Jeanie sent Amber another update.

Johnny turned down Gary’s design the day G died. Gary was broke, apparently.

Amber fired back a quick reply.

OK. Get in that pool. You can do it.

As a rule, Jeanie always followed Amber’s advice, but not this time. She couldn’t get in the pool. Not today. Not ever.

Not after what had happened last time.

AMBER

Amber drove as fast as Bez’s bulky pick-up would allow, windows down despite the freezing weather, bumping around corners and enjoying the roar of the engine. In the cars she passed she saw people huddled in scarves and coats, their windows starting to steam up, but Amber wanted the air on her face – to feel the power of the antique truck as it ate up the road.

Amber had always moved at speed. The files she had finally been allowed to read at eighteen had told her that she had walked at eight months and ever since then she had – according to the various foster families who had hosted her and then ejected her – been absolutely impossible to keep track of. She was always escaping down drainpipes or clambering up pylons, more to entertain herself than with any kind of criminal intent. The police, however, didn’t see it that way, and it was only Jeanie’s dad William, a family lawyer with a heart of gold, who managed to prevent her from getting a criminal record by the age of eighteen. It was thanks to him that she had joined the police rather than being pursued by them, and ever since she had been on the force Amber had done her best to follow the rules, to fit in with what was expected of her.

But now? Now she could break every damn rule in the book if she wanted to. Now, she could be bad.

She drummed her fingers on the wheel as she came to a halt at the traffic lights. There were advantages to operating outside the law. No more red tape. No one to sign things off, no one to tell her that she wasn’t allowed to follow her gut. After Jeanie’s discovery, Amber knew she needed to find out more about Marshall and Cherie. A few calls to local catering companies revealed that they were having a party this week to celebrate Cherie’s birthday. One more conversation had seen Amber taking the place of a poorly member of the gardening team which was spending today preparing the grounds for the festivities.

As she turned into the gravelled waiting area in front of the sleek black gates she checked her phone for the fiftieth time, but the screen remained stubbornly blank. Freya had not been in touch with any information, and any hope that she would was starting to drain away. Amber gripped the wheel as frustration pulsed through her. The post mortem results must be in by now, and Amber needed to see them.

The intercom crackled a greeting and Amber leant over and stated her business.
